Gday Sabre glad to see to you signed up here. There just has been a few troopers start their X-Wing pilot lately so there will few a few people around able to give you some advice on where to get the pieces you'll need.
Other good start up options are the Rebel Fleet Trooper or Jedi.

I'd have to agree with stormraven at least on the point that starting with a jedi is pretty simple and straightforward, although to be fair its the only costume I have experience with.
